2025 Grimwade Medallist Oration: Professor Markus Covert
The Grimwade Medal Oration will be hosted by the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology at The University of Melbourne at the Bio21 Institute Auditorium on Thursday 27 November 2025 from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm AEDT.
The Grimwade Medal for 2025 will be presented to Professor Markus Covert, Shriram Chair of the Department of Bioengineering, Professor of Bioengineering and, by courtesy, of Chemical and Systems Biology at Stanford University, California, US. Professor Covert is also an Associate Investigator with MACSYS.
Over the course of his career, Markus Covert’s lab has generated several new exciting technologies to measure, analyze, and mathematically model the behaviors of individual cells. The lab is probably best known for constructing the first “whole-cell” computational model, which explicitly represents all known gene functions and molecules in a bacterial cell – an advance which was highlighted by the journal Cell as a highlight publication of the 40-year history of that journal.

The Grimwade Medal funded by the Russell and Mab Grimwade Miegunyah Fund has been a significant supporter of academic activity at the University of Melbourne. The Grimwade Medal aims to promote the discipline of biochemistry and molecular biology by inviting a stellar researcher each year to visit the University.
