MACSYS Code of Conduct
The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Mathematical Analysis of Cellular Systems (MACSYS) expects that its members and all participants in Centre activities can enjoy an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. MACSYS is committed to making its meetings and events productive, enjoyable for everyone, regardless of race, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. We will not tolerate harassment in any form. Offensive language and imagery are not appropriate for any of our events, including talks, workshops, parties and social functions, and online media.
This code of conduct applies to all participants in any MACSYS activity, at formal and informal meetings and workshops as well as in all communication, whether electronic or in-person. Any MACSYS member in breach of this policy will be reported to the participating university where they hold their substantive position and may be subject to disciplinary action under the relevant university policies.
All participants should follow these guidelines:
- Behave professionally – Harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary comments or jokes are not appropriate. Harassment includes, but is not limited to, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, sexual attention or innuendo, deliberate intimidation, stalking, photography or recording of an individual without consent. It includes offensive comments related to issues including race, gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof) or
technology choices. - Communication should be appropriate for a diverse audience – All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience, including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual or sexist language and imagery are not Be considerate and respectful to others – Do not insult or put down other Critique ideas rather than individuals.
- We ask that all participants internalise the Centre’s mission of ‘Excellence through Diversity’. We are stronger for our diversity, and it is by harnessing our different perspectives that we will succeed. MACSYS is first and foremost about people. In our dealings with each other we will assume positive intent, in the full knowledge that we will sometimes get it wrong. But when we do, we will be willing to learn to do better if necessary, and act to protect our people.

Events Code of Conduct
MACSYS is committed to ensuring that all MACSYS events provide a safe and inclusive environment free from discrimination and harassment for attendees to engage and participate. This Events Code of Conduct establishes the expectations for professional and respectful participation and behaviour at MACSYS-run and endorsed events, including, but not limited to, meetings, workshops, conferences, online forums, and other activities. MACSYS events should be productive and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of race, gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. We will not tolerate harassment in any form.
Please be reminded that this Events Code of Conduct does not replace the MACSYS Code of Conduct, existing policies and codes that exist at your institution, professional societies, and the national research framework. Under the terms of the venue contract, the venue reserves the right to end the event if there is evidence of disorderly or unlawful conduct. The venue also retains the authority to remove any individual whose behaviour is deemed harmful, disruptive or unacceptable.

Reporting Misconduct
MACSYS takes the protection and wellbeing of its members and event participants very seriously. Participants who experience, witness, or become aware of any breaches or any behaviours inconsistent with this Code of Conduct should seek support or report the matter to the event organisers, or designated Code of Conduct representative as soon as possible. You may also report misconduct to venue security during the event.
Please do not share their contact details with non-attendees.
Reports will be handled with sensitivity, discretion, respect and confidentiality. Complainants will be encouraged to provide details of the incident, including date, time, location, names of parties involved or witnesses, and any other supporting information.
Event organisers and Code of Conduct Representatives reserve the right to take appropriate action in mediating such breaches, including issuing informal or formal warnings and removal from the event without refund. Participants who violate these rules may be restricted from attending future MACSYS events, have their MACSYS membership suspended, and/or have the matter escalated to their institution or employer.
Whilst MACSYS does not possess the authority to run its own parallel misconduct investigations, we will endeavour to ensure that misconduct is dealt with swiftly and appropriately. MACSYS will work with the complainant to escalate matters to the relevant institutions to undergo formal investigations to determine outcomes.
By registering for MACSYS events, you agree to abide by the terms outlined in the MACSYS Events Code of Conduct, the Venue Code of Conduct, as well as your Institutional Code of Conduct, and to contribute to a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone.
