Vinzenz (Vinz) Hofferek

Dr. Vinzenz Hofferek is a Research Fellow in biomedicine and biochemistry at the University of Melbourne’s Bio21 Institute, where he leads development of high-throughput quantitative metabolomics that provides crucial experimental data. His work transforms traditional qualitative metabolomic approaches into robust quantitative frameworks.

Dr. Hofferek completed his PhD in Biochemistry at the Max Planck Institute in Germany developing lipidomics methods in Drosophila. This was followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Melbourne with Professor Gavin Reid on lipidomics of human cell lines, yeast, and other pathogen testing anti-microbial peptides. Currently, he works with Professor Malcolm McConville on parasite metabolism where he developed innovative analytical techniques that have significantly advanced metabolomics research, including methods for high-throughput quantitative metabolomics. His collaborations extend across institutions, working with members of different departments within the University of Melbourne but also across Australia with Monash Universit, Griffith University, and ANU. He specializes in developing standardized workflows for metabolic flux quantification and building comprehensive metabolomics databases. His expertise lies in chromatography, mass spectrometry and data analysis.
